Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg says he is open to the possibility of staging an Ashes Test in India if it helps grow interest in Test cricket, although he made it clear there are no such plans at the moment.
Speaking on the BBC’s Stumped podcast, Greenberg said Cricket Australia would be willing to consider the idea in the future.

“Our relationship with the ECB but also the BCCI is very strong, and clearly there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas,” Greenberg said.

“It’s not something we’re currently planning, but it would be certainly open to consideration. I think Test cricket between us, England and India is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it,” he added.
His comments come just days after Cricket Australia confirmed that the Big Bash League (BBL) will begin its 2026 season in India, with the opening match between the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers set to be played at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Greenberg, however, admitted that fitting additional matches into an already crowded international calendar would be a major challenge.
“The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there’s only 365 days in a schedule and we probably need another month or two [to] generate some of the content that we’re trying to,” he said.
The Ashes is the oldest rivalry in Test cricket, with Australia and England first meeting in 1877.
Earlier this week, the schedule for the 2027 men’s and women’s Ashes was announced, with both series set to be played simultaneously in England. The first-ever Mixed Disability Ashes will also be held during the same period.
